Recognizing Obesity as a Disease |

- The AOA successfully lobbied the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to recognize obesity as a disease and to allow that the costs of treating obesity be deducted from income taxes as a medical deduction as well as be covered by employee health savings accounts.
- The AOA worked with the Social Security Administration (SSA) on new standards for evaluating when severe obesity creates a disability. The final regulations recognize obesity as a disease.
- The AOA successfully persuaded the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat obesity as a disease in regulations establishing permissible advertising claims for dietary supplements.
