American Obesity Association Encouraged by
Approval of New Weight Loss Drug, Xenical (R)

WASHINGTON, April 26, 1999 —The American Obesity Association (AOA) is encouraged by the marketing approval in the U.S. of Xenical (R), a new weight control drug. Today’s approval, by the U. S. Food and Drug Adrninistration (FDA), of Xenical is good news for the 39 million Arnericans with obesity," stated AOA Executive Director, Morgan Downey. "Xenical’s approval broadens the spectrum of drug treatment options that physicians can make available to patients who have a greater medical risk due to their weight. Individuals with serious weighr problems should see their physicians to deterrnine how currently available medications might help them lose weight."

AOA recognizes that drug treatment for weight loss is only one part of a comprehensive weight loss program that includes an active physical lifestyle and a sound nutritional plan. "Obesity is a complex, chronic disease caused by many factors and requires long-term treatment and follow-up care," said Downey. "The public must understand that weight loss drugs should not be used for cosmetic weight loss by individuals who do not meet the recommended criteria. Weight loss medications benefit patients with obesity who face daily, widespread and devastating stigmatization and discrimination because of their size."

AOA, headquartered in Washington, DC, is a national non-profit organization dedicated to advocate on behalf of persons with obesity. Founded in 1995, AOA’s mission is to promote the recognition of obesity as a major public health problem, educate the public about the health risks of obesity, advocate for greater research on obesity, and advocate for coverage by managed care organizations for obesity prevention and treatment.
