American Obesity Association Announces Weight Wellness Week

WASHINGTON, August 18, 1998 —The American Obesity Association (AOA), through its National Campaign of Obesity Education, has announced the debut of Weight Wellness Week (September 13 -19).

The purpose of Weight Wellness Week is to establish programs to encourage greater awareness and understanding of health complications associated with being overweight or obese. This educational campaign will encourage individuals to seek out more information on prevention, management, and treatment of obesity.

As part of Weight Wellness Week, AOA has developed a user-friendly self-assessment tool called the Weight Wellness Profile. The profile, based on physical size, lifestyle habits and medical history, is designed for individuals to assess their risk of developing health complications from being overweight or obese. Users are encouraged to discuss the profile with a medical professional. The Weight Wellness Profile will be distributed to the medical community (physician offices nationwide) and to the general public (via media public service announcements and AOA's website: www.obesity.org).

In addition, on-line internet discussions on various obesity related topics will be scheduled during Weight Wellness Week. These discussions, in an interactive question/answer format, will be hosted by professionals working in the field of obesity. Computer users can participate or observe the discussion by visiting AOA’s website.

For more information about Weight Wellness Week, program involvement, or to obtain a color copy of the Weight Wellness Profile write to AOA, 1250 24th Street, N.W., Suite 300, Washington, DC 20037, call 1-800-98-OBESE, or visit our website.

The AOA is a nonprofit, health advocacy organization headquartered in Washington DC. AOA’s mission includes promoting the recognition of obesity as a disease, educating the public of the health risks associated with obesity, supporting obesity research, and advocating health insurance coverage of obesity treatment and prevention.
