Improving the Understanding of Obesity |
| |
- The World Wide Web has developed as a major educational tool. The AOA made a major revision of our web site, which launched in April 2002. Our goal has been to make this site the most comprehensive web site on overweight and obesity.
- The AOA has continued to grow as a major voice on obesity in the nation's newspapers and TV markets. Newspaper articles citing the American Obesity Association routinely appear throughout the nation. It is not uncommon for the AOA to be cited in any one month in newspapers with a circulation between 4 to 16 million.
-
The AOA launched Weight Wellness Week as the beginning of our National Campaign of Obesity Education. The AOA developed the Weight Wellness Profile, a one-page self-assessment of the health risks associated with being overweight or obese.
- The AOA has developed several Fact
Sheets dealing with various aspects of obesity and public
policies including:
- What is Obesity?
- Obesity - A Global Epidemic
- Obesity in the U.S.
- Morbid Obesity
- Obesity in Minority Populations
- Women and Obesity
- Obesity in Youth
- Health Effects of Obesity
- Obesity Treatment
- Obesity Research
- Obesity and Health Insurance
- Obesity, Medicaid and Medicare
- Obesity and Consumer Protection
- A routine but crucial activity is handling requests for information. We receive numerous requests every day from professionals, patients, caregivers, media, policy makers, or associations requesting various pieces of information or responses.
- American Obesity Association Research Foundation (AOARF) publications include three monographs: on the Cost of Obesity, on results from our National Survey of Parents Perceptions of their Childrens Weight, and on The Use of Multimodal Therapies in the Treatment of Obesity.
