Expanding Research on Obesity |

The AOA has testified before Congress on several occasions on the need for expanding obesity research. Since the initiation of our lobbying efforts, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for obesity research has increased from under $100 million to over $400 million.
- The AOA has developed a proposal for creation of a National Institute for Obesity Research at NIH to lead and focus national and international efforts to better prevent and treat obesity.
- The AOA testified before the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) / Institute of Medicine (IOM) on NIH priority setting criteria and obesity research. Our points were addressed in its final report.
- The AOA provided extensive and detailed comments on the draft of the NIH Strategic Plan for Obesity Research.
