About the AOA
Protecting Consumers from Frauds and Scams

  • The AOA created a Patient’s Bill of Rights, to which all professional and corporate members of the AOA must subscribe. It is intended to help consumers identify products and services, which meet generally accepted standards. Professional members receive a membership certificate with the Patient's Bill of Rights.
  • As part of the Partnership for Healthy Weight Management, the AOA actively worked with the Federal Trade Commission to establish voluntary standards in the weight control industry. The Partnership announced voluntary industry standards in February 1999.
  • The AOA is working with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on new labeling standards for dietary supplements and calorie information on food packages and in restaurants.
