In this section, we will explain research funding, what we have learned about obesity, what clinical trials are and how you can participate.

About Research
Research helps us to know more about the complexities of obesity. Yet, there is so much more for researchers to explore. Research is the foundation for identifying better treatment and strategies for prevention. In these pages, we will guide you toward a better understanding of obesity research, explain why funding is important, and describe the AOA's role in helping to increase funding.
Research Funding
Researchers need money to conduct studies, and often depend on the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is the largest public source of research funding. Every year, Congress decides the NIH's budget, which is now more than $15.6 billion.
The NIH uses six criteria to determine the priority of the research it funds. Although obesity meets all the criteria and is one of 10 Leading Health Indicators in the U.S., it receives less than 1.0% of the NIH's total budget.

AOA Research Foundation
The purpose of the AOA Research Foundation, established in 2001, is to collect funds for use in furthering scientific research in the field of obesity.
